英国玄学派诗人约翰·多恩于1623年在《祈祷文集》第十七篇写下了这样的诗句：

没有人是一座岛屿，自成一体。  

每一个人都是广袤大陆的一部份。

海浪冲掉一块岩石，

大陆就减损。

如同一个海岬失掉一角。

如同你的朋友或者你自己的庄园失掉一块。

任何人的死亡都是我之哀伤，

因为我包孕在人类之中。

所以，不要问丧钟为谁而鸣，

它为你而鸣。

No man is an island,

Entire of itself.

Each is a piece of the continent,

A part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,

Motherland is the less.

As well as if a promontory were.

As well as if a manner of thine own

Or of thine friend’s were.
